Thank you, Von 46

I am testing the engine with Sygyzy TB5: very high speed of access to the TB. Sygyzy seems much better than Gaviota and Nalimov!

I am trying to download also the Sygyzy TB6 from

After a long wait of about 10 days (unfortunately in Italy Internet speed is that of a Third World country...), at last, I have downloaded the 150 GB of Syzygy 6men DTZ & WDL.

Nevertheless, with Syzygy 6men, Stockfish has the same problem that afflicts other engines with Nalimov 6men: an excessive slowdown of the engine, that spends much time in the search of data base positions rather than in the analysis. Crying or Very sad

It would be welcome a version of SF Syzygy bases with "Soft Probe Depth" and "Hard Probe Dept" adjustment, as in Robert Houdart's Houdini and in Jeremy Bernstein's SF3 PA GBT...Wink

Slowdown (in nps) is around 6-7 % in some middle and end game positions.

i'm very weak in programming so...No

Here is a new compile with source code along with joona's patch (allowTTMoveInQsearch) applied this seem success.

Tank you, Von 46 Very Happy

Only 6-7% of slowdown in end game with TB6 is a great result! Have you got a Solid State Disk?

Unfortunately, I have a "bottle neck" in my hardware (a laptop with i7 2630M 2GHz with a traditional hard disk) and, in many end game with only 7-8 men, the slowdown is more than 70-80%, and in some position also 90%. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I have sent a request to Jeremy Bernstein for a version of SF Syzygybase like those he compiled for Gaviota TB; in the meanwhile I will try to use only the TB6 files of the most common typologyes of end game, as K+R+P vs. K+R+P, K+R+2P vs. K+R, and so on, putting them in the folder of 5men files.

This attempt should reduce memory to only 10-20 GByte and, I hope, increase speed...

This is unbelievable..
How do you test that?

This is a typical position:

White: Ke3; Ba7; Pb5; Pf4; Pf2
Black: Kf7; Bf6; Pb4; Pf5; Ph6

(from Portish - Karpov, Tilburg, 1986).

Karpov won with 53...Be7!! and SF, on my hardware i7 2630QM 2GHz, find the winning move, on average, in 2-3', rejecting 53...b3?!
My GUI is ChessBase 10 and I have tested this position with Stockfish 230913 x64 SSE4.2 using Probe Syzygybases = 0 (no TB), = 5 (5men) and = 6 (6men), taking speed in kN/s and depth after 60" (when engine still suggests 53...b3?!).

Probe Sbases = 0: 8400 kN/s d = 33
Probe Sbases = 5: 7800 kN/s d = 35
Probe Sbases = 6: 900 kN/s d = 26

The fall is really dramatic , and stongly penalizes the performance of the engine passing by 5 to 6 men.
I have the same problem with Nalimov TB6 for all the engine that support them, except Houdini 3 that softly uses tablebases.

I don't know the reason of this behaviour, and I can only suppose that it is due to the slowness of the hard disk.

If only large SSD drivers were less expensive...

I dont have 6 men bases to test..
But upto 5 men the slowdown is 7%(as your results and mine)

Try to remove potentially unwanted bases like KNNN vs KN, KRRR vs KR
and see if there is any improvement in kn/s
