Chessgod101 members,
Some of you may not know this but I am about to share with you a secret. When they "give" you something they "give" it with the full belief that they have the right to hold it over you, and that YOU are to laud them and kiss their azz every time they demand it. clown They think they own you. Weather you thank them over there at that dead site, no matter how many times you press that little button over there is never enough. Those bloated, arrogant egos must come over here and demand their azz be kissed anew.
Who's going to line up first to kiss the royal AZZ?
Not me.

Immortalchess has been shut? - Page 24 Empty what happened?

Post  aragadotus on Fri Mar 01, 2019 9:59 pm

I was wondering what had happened and i can't believe it! i had been away but I received an email from my trusted friend at Immortal that stated that many of the members where arrested for human trafficking and child pornography! I believe my friend he would not lie. Who got arrested? did anyone hear? I am afraid to ask as I'd have nothing to do with that. Has anyone heard anything?

I just want to share my total support to what Kir said. Immortalchess was great place. It is unbelievable to read all the complaints and lack of elementary respect to the work of moderators and contributors.
From the many years at Immortal I think the individuals that got in trouble were mainly very rude guys that requested things in demanding and impolite manner. Even the endless political discussions were more or less tolerated in their separate thread as far as no offensive language was used.
I deeply hope that Immortal will be resurrected in some form and will be glad to help this happen.

As for the criminal charges mentioned in a post above, it sounds unlikely that personalities with such interest will be in love with chess and will devote their time and resources to a non-commercial forum. However if some of the main contributors were identified based on IP then they can run into deep trouble in relation to copyright violations.

Welcome, ggeorg.

I remember following your posts in various discussion threads focusing on chess openings/theory at Immortal. Enjoyed them a lot.

ggeorg wrote:I just want to share my total support to what Kir said. Immortalchess was great place. I agree with your comment.  As I said earlier, I never had problems with the mods at Immortal - especially those guys in the book section. Members like gaurav_singh, Ali, xyzjos, gambit_man, ChessCaissa, Miroslav (and many unnamed others) were/are fantastic. I am grateful to those people for all that I received and tried to give back by modestly sharing things they didn't yet have.

You have to have rules and the enforcement of said rules or chaos erupts (like five pages of one sentence requests for the latest Komodo engine Very Happy ). Letting a group of large egos run free in a social setting usually results in catastrophe!

You hit on part of the point there: YOU never had a problem. Which Presumes no one else did.

Let me tell you an old, old story about the first book I scanned. You may have it. It was The Method In Chess by Iossif Dorfman. I scanned and shared it Chess India in the Premium Lounge. It was to be released to the open section and to immortal in a couple of weeks and was leaked over at immortal. That was the whatever part. ALL I asked (Asad and other mods) was that my NAME be put down as the scanner since I am. All a scanner has is a name. A name to their hard work and devotion to the printed word. And I was ignored. Just talking books I have scanned and shared over 25 books there and I was ignored. A site that said over and over "we value our scanners"?

Does my treatment seem equitable to you?

I was speaking of the treatment that I, myself, received. Not anybody else. If people presumed otherwise, they were mistaken.

I hear you. If you asked for and were promised things and they reneged, your treatment was unjust (and not very ethical on their part).

In my case, I asked for no acknowledgement with respect to the four titles that I scanned.  I merely shared in order to return something back to the forum. I, personally, harbor no ill will against them.

@justMG: I agree completely that the sequence of events as described by you is an example of unethical treatment. Here some of the moderators mentioned is the most appropriate person to shed light.
However as Jim said I am not telling that always everything was perfect. It might be impossible when managing a huge forum like Immortal. However the occasional slips should not bias the overall evaluation of the endeavor and work done by the moderators and the active members of the Immortal community- it was fantastic!
Actually for me Immortal was even not so much a site for downloads (I pretty much have what I need and I do not like creation of huge collection of titles for the sake of it) but a place where it was possible to follow the developments and evolution in chess thought and to discuss on these. And Immortal has to a large degree matured and reached that level, not at a last place because of the strict rules of communication. As Jim said, these rules were necessary to neutralize aggressive leechers and huge egos that otherwise rapidly flood any topic.
As already said if threshold number of people is reached with the idea to save Immortal, I will be glad to help. If we reach something like 50 (or more) reliable individuals I believe things can be pretty manageable.

I have not criticized immortalchess. All I have said is that BP (as an ADMINISTRATOR) and G. Singh as a moderator, owed an explanation to the English speaking forum members. We just wanted to know why the site kept going off line and what happened to it now. If they don't know anything about it, then they should say so. That is why I called them incompetent and I stand by that statement.

@jeando...I do not agree with whatever it is you think your doing.

Now back to the discussion at hand. There where aspects of immortal that worked exceedingly well and things that we can all agree did not work. Those who create the next sharing place should seriously look at what made immortal a "fantastic" place such as Comradery, knowledgeable membership and ability to work on a wide variety of difficult, time consuming projects. Likewise, they should take a solemn cold look at what did NOT work such as politics(which I abhorred),infighting over trivial matters, withholding achievements(Such as with SC) and general cliquish behavior that feed into a negative relation to members which works against comradery.(If one member of the group achieves it benefits all of the group.)

A mission statement comes to mind as it would define a common direction along with core principles(and an agreement to adhere to them) might work in the next site.

I hope that the next site might take these considerations.

As for leechers, it is easy to blame problems on them but where all leechers once. We learned that we where in error. SNR spoke to me one day at Chess India and the voice in his writing made me admire him. I do not recall what he said verbatim. I just recall his "voice". It made me want to help and as best as I could I did. If I could speak in that voice I would.

@tactician: I have no internal information but may be moderators and Pozitiffchess are considering between possible resolutions and there is still uncertainty. Therefore it is prematurely to report anything. Furthermore it is not excluded that (some of) them are in legal trouble and/or should be careful to not expose their real identity. I am not speaking about the human trafficking and the other unbelievable issues mentioned here, but for something much more simple and probable. In Western Europe and North America the copyright violation is a very serious thing and will lead to heavy charges with heavy financial consequence or even a jail time. Thus the key people need to be very careful. By the way I hope they knew this well before Immortal got shut down and took care to not be tracked. If a group of reliable people (to which I will be glad to contribute) decides to resurrect the site this should be the first point to consider: how to avoid or minimize legal complications.

Really? “Good manners” were always alien to Immortal Members like Kir who would write very nasty comments on any one who asked even an innocuous question. Indeed, I resigned my membership as members like him could not restrained.
Knowing him as I do there would be further nasty comments by him here. However, he would be well-advised not to waste time of other members. I still remember with pleasure my interaction with Bishop Pair and Gaurav Singh at Immortal Chess What I did in turn was to offer a lot of links to very good material that otherwise would not be available. Currently Chessgod101.com is doing fine and former members of ImmortalChess can help out here. I have just joined and hope to do it myself.

Post  ggeorg on Tue Mar 05, 2019 11:38 am

In terms of available material it looks like ChessGod101 has most of the material (as far as it concerns the English language section) available in Immortal. The main deficiencies looks to be that:

(1) the forum aspect looks scarce- most of the threads appear to be of requests and links, practically no discussion. I am new here so apologies if I have missed such existing threads. In Immortal there were several threads- Discussion of chess materials, discussion of books/openings, tests of engines etc. both in the English and in the Russian section- where there was true communication between the members and often a very interesting one

(2) the site looks much less structured and harder to navigate, find the topics of interest and monitor them on a daily basis. This might be the reason for point (1)- if it is harder to find and monitor a thread then it is harder to establish long term communication between the members as well.

However these thoughts are not to diminish the endeavor of ChessGod moderators and staff. It is a great and noble effort on their part. It is definitively a bless that ChessGod is here to preserve chess knowledge and the community around it. Also the more unpolished look of the site very well may have ensured its survival. Immortal was a too major irritation to the publishers.
