Cfish: Updated December, 2 2018

- Changelog: Updated to "Replace the PassedDanger array by an equation".

CFish, a port of Stockfish written in plain C by Ronald de Man, first published on GitHub in July 2016. Possibly inspired by the asmFish project to speed up Stockfish using a programming language closer to the machine, the purpose of CFish is to explore possible optimization issues of C versus C++ compilers.

One of the best engine to analyze games, very versatile.

Test 46 games at 1m + 1s
Cfish 280319 – Stockfish 240419 without book.bin: +4 =36 -6
Windows 10 PRO Procesor: I7-4790 CPU 3.60 GHz; RAM: 32.0 GB; System type: 64-bit. Both engines are BMI2
Values is roughly equal, but I prefer Cfish to corespondence chess, because Cfish uses Book.bin and thus becomes Better Stockfish.

Bin books are not made for correspondence chess, unless you're using SCiD with its Book Tune function or Droidfish. You may want to try CTG if you have Fritz or ABK if you have Arena.

I'm sorry, I do chess analysis only on Fritz 15, bought from chessbse. I tried to work on the Arena, but I did not like it and I quit quickly. With DCID I do not know how to work, and Droidfish is an android and it does not help me. In conclusion, I only use Book.ctg. I did not know that book.bin does not help me with infinite analysis.
Thank you very much for clarifications!

Cfish: Updated June, 6 2019.

- Changelog: Updated to "Scale lazy threshold according to material".

Why choosing Cfish for chess analysis:

Cfish is absolutely the best program for chess analysis; this morning I had the oppportunity to test it on an AMD ThreadRipper 2990WX in the Fritz Cloud Room: its coherence is above any other chess program. In other words it shows almost always the correct move (after depth 30 or the like) with the proper position score, while programs like the original Stockfish set a positive score, suggest a move, and when the move is done the score suddendly drops down. If you want to avoid alot of frustration you should use Cfish for your analysis.

Mr Massimiliano, first of all I want to thank you for the beautiful gift by the way you made it to my birthday!
As for chess engines, in a previous comment you say that CorChess is more accurate than Cfish. Do I understand that the values have been reversed now?

Yes, for a little while it seemed better, but in some update the CorChess analysis coherence were gone!! Maybe it's an empirical happening only related to my computer. I make mistakes too, that's why I always suggest to experiment by ourselves.

I've tried Cfish on another computer not mine, an AMD ThreadRipper 2990WX, through the Fritz Cloud Room. It was a test in which I've tried several engines in a single opening position (hence alot of pieces): Stockfish, asmFish and Cfish. This last one was the best of all.

I have an exercice for you, so that you'll understand what I mean: try to continue the game and bring the score to 0.00 in the following line: 1.e4 e5, 2.Nf3 Nc6, 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 Bc5, 5.O-O

Try first with Stockfish and see how at move #5 for black it's evaluation is wrong: you'll wait for some minute, it will sugges a move, once you've made that move for Black it will report an advantage for White, and if you go back on the same move Stockfish most probably will suggest another move. That's what I call "incoherence".

Then try to solve the same position with Cfish and behold the difference. You can also try CorChess and make comparisons.

Hello,
I also noticed this "incoherence" for Stockfish but I thought it is because the engine is "learning" that a move has a drawback and it tries another( better) move ,changing also his evaluation as a consequence.

I will test the engines and your position, but before that, I have a position in the correspondence game that seems to have found the solution only after 5 days of successive analysis with CorChess and Cfish. Cfish helped me avoid a wrong move that CorChess did not see. Cfish seems safer, but this is not perfect either.

We are FAR AWAY than having perfect engines, that's why they keep to grow in strength. A perfect engine couldn't enhance anymore. Waiting for your opinion on that line.

I'm afraid that the classic engines will soon be history. Their place will be taken by intelligent engines. Already Lc0 defeated Stockfish. If they fix the mistakes at the end of the game, then we can use Lc0 with confidence.
